The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has released the official holiday dates for the upcoming Islamic New Year (1st of Muharram) for both the public and private sectors. This day marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and holds significant religious importance for Muslims worldwide; however, in the GCC, it also impacts business operations and official schedules.

Key Dates for the Islamic New Year in the GCC

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The UAE will observe the Islamic New Year holiday on Friday, June 27, 2025, for both government and private sector employees. The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) confirmed this holiday, with Dubai also issuing a directive for government offices to remain closed. Businesses offering essential services may operate with adjusted schedules.

Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, Thursday, June 26, 2025, will be a public holiday for both the public and private sectors.

Qatar

Qatar does not recognize the Islamic New Year as an official public holiday. Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has announced that the 1st of Muharram 1447 AH falls on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, but businesses will continue their operations as usual.

Oman

Oman’s official holiday for the Islamic New Year is Sunday, June 29, 2025, in line with its weekend schedule. Public and private sector employees will enjoy a three-day weekend. However, businesses may ask employees to work based on operational needs, with compensation as per the Oman Labor Law.

Bahrain

Bahrain will observe the Islamic New Year holiday on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Government offices and ministries will be closed in observance of the occasion.

Kuwait

Kuwait has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as the official public holiday for the Islamic New Year, with all ministries and state institutions closed. Operations will resume on Sunday, June 29, creating a long weekend for employees.

The Islamic New Year offers a moment for religious reflection and renewal across the GCC, while also necessitating adjustments for businesses. While the observance varies slightly among countries, most GCC nations have harmonized their holiday calendars. Businesses should stay informed to prevent disruptions during this period and other upcoming holidays like Mawlid Al-Nabawi and National Days.
