In Practice

How Skills Passport works?

Workforce intelligence is built at the intersection of internal people data and external market data, and requires both to be genuinely useful. Internal data alone tells you about your own workforce but not whether it is strong or weak relative to the market. External data alone tells you about talent availability and compensation but not whether your workforce matches what you need. The combination produces strategic insights that neither source provides independently: whether the capabilities you have are sufficient for your strategy given what the market requires, whether your compensation is competitive given what the market pays, and where talent supply constraints will require alternative talent strategies rather than conventional hiring.

People May Ask

Common questions about employee engagement.

What is a skills passport?
A portable, comprehensive digital record of an individual's verified skills, learning achievements, certifications, and work experiences — designed to follow them across employers, institutions, and career changes.
How is a skills passport different from a resume?
A resume is self-reported and formatted for a specific application. A skills passport is continuously updated, externally verified, and machine-readable — designed for lifelong portability rather than one-time submission.
Who is developing skills passport initiatives?
The European Skills Passport, Singapore's Skills Framework, and various national workforce agencies are developing standardized portable skills records. Many HR tech platforms are also building proprietary versions.
How would a skills passport benefit workers?
It removes the need to repeatedly prove credentials to new employers, provides evidence of continuous learning, makes career transitions easier, and gives workers ownership of their skills data independent of any single employer.
What are the main barriers to skills passport adoption?
Lack of standardization across institutions and employers, data privacy concerns, verification infrastructure costs, and the challenge of getting employer and educational institution adoption simultaneously.
